The plant that ultimately became the Uniroyal plant was founded in 1916 by R.B. Gillette as the Gillette Rubber Company. In 1940, the United States Rubber Company, later Uniroyal, Inc., purchased Gillette. For a brief period during World War II the Eau Claire plant was called the Gillette Tire Plant. The plant closed in 1991, following the purchase of Uniroyal Goodrich by Michelin et Cie. The first commencement of the Eau Claire State Normal School was held in June 1917.
